How online VCE tutoring works
Every student gets a plan built around what is holding them back and their school's assessment calendar, then plenty of exam practice.
- Find the gap first. It might be the content, exam technique, study habits, direction or motivation. Your tutor works this out before anything else.
- Plan around the Graded Assessments. In Units 3 and 4, each study score combines School-assessed Coursework (SACs), School-assessed Tasks where the study has them, and the exams (VCAA). Lessons follow your child's SAC calendar, not just the final exams.
- Fundamentals, then practice. Content is broken down until it's easy to understand, then applied to questions that build from easier to harder.
- Practice exams. Before the October–November exams, past VCE exams under timed conditions become the priority, with feedback on every answer.
- Keep you in the loop. Parents get a written summary after every lesson, and a detailed report every 10 lessons.
Lessons happen by video call, so all your child needs is a computer with a camera and a reliable internet connection.
When to start VCE tutoring
The earlier the better. We recommend starting in Year 11: it gives students a year to make mistakes with a tutor's guidance, then a year to do really well in Units 3 and 4. Here is how the VCE years usually run:
- Year 11: Units 1 and 2. The best time to start, while the stakes are lower.
- Year 12, Terms 1–3: Units 3 and 4. SACs through the year, plus the General Achievement Test (GAT) in June. In 2026 the GAT was on 16 June; it doesn't count directly towards VCE results (VCAA, KIS Academics).
- Year 12, late October to November: the VCE exams. In 2026 they run from 26 October to 18 November, starting with English on 27 October (KIS Academics).
- December: results. Students receive study scores out of 50, and the ATAR is calculated by VTAC (VCAA).
Starting later still helps. Even a few weeks of practice exams before October can lift a study score.

Why Victorian families choose Rubix
Rubix was founded in 2021 by Chris Tembeleski, who has tutored Year 12 students since 2017 and trains every Rubix tutor himself.

Frequently asked questions
How much does online VCE tutoring cost?
At Rubix, online VCE tutoring costs $105 an hour for Years 11 and 12, for every study. VCE specialists in Australia usually charge $90–$190 an hour (KIS Academics, Learnmate).
Do you offer tutoring in person in Melbourne?
Not at the moment. Rubix tutors Victorian students online, which means students anywhere in the state can join. In-person lessons are available across Sydney.
Is online VCE tutoring as good as in-person tutoring?
It depends on the student. Online lessons follow the same approach as in-person ones, and many students find them easier to fit around school and sport. The first lesson is a good way to find out, since you won't be charged for it if you don't continue.
How are VCE study scores worked out?
In Units 3 and 4, the VCAA combines a student's Graded Assessments (SACs, School-assessed Tasks and exams) into a study score out of 50. The average is 30, and a score of 38 or more puts a student in the top 15% (VCAA).
What is the GAT?
The General Achievement Test is sat by VCE students in June. It doesn't count directly towards VCE results; the VCAA uses it to check that assessments were marked accurately and fairly, and since 2022 it also measures literacy and numeracy (VCAA).
When should my child start VCE tutoring?
As early as possible, ideally in Year 11. Units 1 and 2 give students a year to make mistakes with a tutor's support before Units 3 and 4, which count towards their study scores.
Can a tutor help with SACs?
Yes. Tutors help students understand what a SAC is testing, practise similar questions and get feedback. The work students submit must always be their own, as VCAA rules require.
