How HSC tutoring works at Rubix

Every student gets a plan built around what is actually holding them back, then lots of practice under exam conditions.

  1. Find the gap first. It might be the content, exam technique, study habits, direction or motivation. Your tutor works this out before anything else.
  2. Plan around school assessments. Half of every HSC mark comes from school assessments and half from the HSC exam, so lessons follow your child's assessment schedule, not just the final exams (NESA).
  3. Fundamentals, then practice. Content is broken down until it's easy to understand, then applied to practice questions that build from easier to harder.
  4. Past papers and exam technique. Before trials and the HSC, practice papers become the priority, with feedback on every answer.
  5. Keep you in the loop. Parents get a written summary after every lesson, and a detailed report every 10 lessons covering everything worked on since the last one.

Students can ask anything, as often as they need. Chris trains every tutor to build the kind of relationship where students aren't embarrassed to say they're stuck.

When to start HSC tutoring

The earlier the better. We recommend starting at the beginning of Year 11: it gives students a year to make mistakes with a tutor's guidance, then a year to do really well once HSC courses begin. Here is how the HSC years run:

  1. Year 11, Terms 1–3: Year 11 (Preliminary) courses. The best time to start: students learn from their mistakes with a tutor's support before HSC courses begin.
  2. Year 11, Term 4: HSC courses usually begin (SCEGGS HSC guide).
  3. Year 12, Terms 1–3: school assessment tasks, which make up half of each HSC mark, and trial exams at most schools.
  4. Year 12, Term 4: the HSC written exams. In 2026 they run from 13 October to 5 November (NESA).
  5. December: results. 2026 HSC results are released on 16 December (NESA).

Starting later still helps. Even a few weeks of past-paper practice before the trials or the HSC can lift a result.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child start HSC tutoring?

As early as possible, ideally at the start of Year 11. Year 11 gives students a year to make mistakes with a tutor's support, then a year to do really well once HSC courses begin in Term 4. Starting later still helps: past-paper practice in the final weeks can lift a result.

How much does HSC tutoring cost in Sydney?

HSC specialists in Australia usually charge $90–$190 an hour (KIS Academics, Learnmate). At Rubix, HSC tutoring costs $105 an hour online or $115 at home, for every subject.

Which HSC subjects do you tutor?

Every HSC subject, including English Extension 1 and 2 and Mathematics Extension 1 and 2. The most requested are English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Business Studies, Economics and Legal Studies.

Is online HSC tutoring as good as tutoring at home?

It depends on the student. Online lessons follow the same approach and cost $10 an hour less, while some students focus better with a tutor beside them. The first lesson is a good way to find out, since you won't be charged for it if you don't continue.

What is a Band 6?

Band 6 is the highest result in an HSC course: a mark of 90 or more. Extension courses are marked out of 50, and the top band, E4, starts at 45 (NESA).

How is the HSC mark worked out?

Each HSC mark is the average of the student's school assessment mark and their HSC exam mark, so both count equally (NESA). That's why Rubix lessons follow the school's assessment schedule as well as preparing for the exams.

Can a tutor help with assessment tasks?

Yes. Tutors help students understand the task, plan their response and improve drafts with feedback. The work itself must always be the student's own, as the HSC rules require.
