How online lessons work
Online lessons work just like lessons at home, except your child and their tutor meet by video call.
- Tell us about your child. Their year, subjects and goals. Chris matches them with the right tutor. The best thing about online tutoring is that your child isn't limited to the tutors who live in your suburb. We can choose from our whole team to find a great match, so your child and their tutor can build a long-lasting, trusting relationship.
- The first lesson finds the gaps. Your tutor works out what's holding your child back: content, exam technique, study habits or confidence.
- Weekly live lessons. One-on-one by video call, built around your child's school work and upcoming assessments. Lessons are usually on Zoom or Google Meet, depending on the tutor.
- You stay in the loop. A written summary after every lesson, and a detailed report every 10 lessons.
What you need: a computer or laptop with a camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection, and a quiet spot to work. Headphones help.

Online tutoring: frequently asked questions
Is online tutoring as good as in-person tutoring?
For most students, yes. What makes tutoring work is a good tutor, regular lessons and teaching matched to the student, and online lessons keep all three. Online tutoring also has one big advantage: your child isn't limited to the tutors who live in your suburb, so we can find a great match from our whole team, someone your child can build a long-lasting, trusting relationship with. Research summarised by Evidence for Learning finds one-to-one tuition adds about five months of extra progress over a year, on average. Some younger children focus better with a tutor in the room, which is why Rubix also offers in-home tutoring in Sydney.
What does my child need for online lessons?
A laptop or computer with a camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection and a quiet place to work. Lessons are usually on Zoom or Google Meet; your tutor chooses which one and sends you the link.
What time are online lessons?
Lessons run between 8:30 am and 9 pm Sydney time, every day of the week, all year. If you live in another time zone, we'll book a time that suits you in your local time.
Do you tutor students outside New South Wales?
Yes. Online tutoring is available anywhere in Australia. For Years 11 and 12, we tutor the VCE in Victoria, the QCE in Queensland, the SACE in South Australia and the WACE in Western Australia, with tutors from those states.
How much does online tutoring cost?
$95 an hour for Kindergarten to Year 10 and $105 an hour for Years 11 and 12. There's no enrolment fee, and lessons are paid by the term.
How long is each lesson?
Lessons can be any length and are charged at the hourly rate. Short, regular lessons tend to work better than long, occasional ones.
