HSC maths: the exams and where marks are lost

NSW has new maths syllabuses. Year 12 students begin them in Term 4 2026, and the first HSC exams under them are in 2027 (NESA). Each maths course has one HSC exam:

Course Time Marks What's in it
Mathematics Standard 1 2 hours, plus 10 minutes reading 80 15 marks of multiple choice, then 65 marks of written questions
Mathematics Standard 2 2 hours 30 minutes, plus 10 minutes reading 100 15 marks of multiple choice, then 85 marks of written questions
Mathematics Advanced 3 hours, plus 10 minutes reading 100 10 marks of multiple choice, then 90 marks of written questions
Mathematics Extension 1 2 hours, plus 10 minutes reading 70 10 marks of multiple choice, then 60 marks of written questions
Mathematics Extension 2 3 hours, plus 10 minutes reading 100 10 marks of multiple choice, then 90 marks of written questions

Every paper comes with a reference sheet, and NESA-approved calculators are allowed. Source: NESA HSC exam specifications for Standard, Advanced, Extension 1 and Extension 2.

Where students most often lose marks

  1. Not doing enough past papers. This is the biggest one. HSC questions often combine several topics and are worded differently from textbook exercises, so a student who has only practised textbook questions can freeze in the exam. Past HSC papers are the best preparation there is, which is why Rubix tutors build them into lessons, and why students should do as many as they can.
  2. Gaps from earlier years. Advanced and Extension maths build on Year 9 and 10 algebra, and weak algebra shows up in almost every topic. Fixing those gaps early makes every later topic easier.
  3. Careless errors under time pressure. A dropped negative sign or a copying mistake costs as much as not knowing the topic.
  4. Not showing working. Longer questions give marks for the steps, so a right answer with no working can lose marks, while good working can still earn most of them.

VCE maths: Methods and Specialist exams

VCE has four maths subjects in Units 3 and 4: Foundation Mathematics, General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics. Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics each have two end-of-year exams:

Exam Time What's allowed Share of the study score
Examination 1 1 hour, plus reading time No calculator or notes 20%
Examination 2 2 hours, plus reading time A CAS calculator and one bound reference 40%

School-assessed coursework (SACs) makes up the other 40%. Because Examination 1 allows no calculator, students need to be quick and accurate by hand as well as confident with their CAS. Sources: VCAA Specialist Mathematics exam specifications and Mathematical Methods Units 3 and 4.

Rubix tutors every VCE maths subject online, and matches VCE students with former VCE students or tutors with VCE experience. See our online VCE tutoring page.

How maths lessons work

  1. The first lesson finds the gaps. Your tutor works out what's holding your child back, including gaps from earlier years that make new topics harder.
  2. Understanding before speed. Tutors explain why a method works, not just the steps, so your child can handle questions they haven't seen before.
  3. Lessons follow school. Tutors work through your child's current topics, assessment tasks and upcoming exams, so every lesson helps with what's due next.
  4. Lots of past papers. Past HSC papers are a big part of lessons. As exams get closer, students do full papers under exam time, with a focus on showing working and avoiding careless errors.
  5. You stay in the loop. A written summary after every lesson, and a detailed report every 10 lessons.

Maths tutoring: frequently asked questions

When should my child start maths tutoring?

Maths builds on itself, so the sooner gaps are fixed, the easier every later topic becomes. For the HSC, starting in Year 11 is ideal: school assessments make up half of each HSC mark, so Year 12 tests count as much as the final exam.

Which HSC maths course should my child take?

It depends on their strengths and what they want to study after school. Some university courses list Mathematics Advanced or Extension 1 as assumed knowledge, so check the courses your child is interested in. A tutor can help your child decide before Year 11 subject selection.

Do you tutor Mathematics Extension 2?

Yes. Rubix tutors every HSC maths course, from Standard 1 to Extension 2, and every VCE maths subject, including Specialist Mathematics.

Can you help with maths for the OC and selective school tests?

Yes. Tutors prepare students for the mathematical reasoning and thinking skills parts of both tests.

Does maths tutoring work online?

Yes. Students work through problems with their tutor on screen and get feedback as they go. Because lessons are online, your child isn't limited to tutors who live nearby, so we can match them with the right maths tutor from our whole team.

How much does maths tutoring cost?

$95 an hour online for Kindergarten to Year 10 and $105 for Years 11 and 12. In-home lessons in Sydney are $105 and $115. There's no enrolment fee.
